Whilst my first novel, The Sex Ed Chronicles, was reviewed by my publishers, I started a 2nd story that revolves around yet another controversial subject in large schools and colleges: Army recruiting on campus.
The alter in subjects has not been a massive jump.
Military recruiting and sex schooling have a lot more in widespread than you may possibly believe.
Each are focal points for parental debates, and they are the most publicized examples where the federal government has attempted to “meddle” in the affairs of neighborhood public schools. In addition, the armed forces, as effectively as pro-option and pro-lifestyle organizations, advertise wisely to influence substantial college students to make selections. Lastly, in both, students and mother and father worry the significant consequences of producing the wrong choice.
The federal government does not ask higher college and school college students to join the armed forces per se they provide the legislation and the tools for the recruiters to do it. Such legislation is far from new in 1980, in the wake of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iran hostage crisis, President Jimmy Carter received approval from Congress to reinstate mandatory registration for military service for males 18 via 25. I was a sophomore in school at the time. I registered as essential nevertheless, military recruiters in no way contacted me, nor was I asked to serve. I was perfectly happy to comply with that policy of “do not inquire, do not tell.”
Military recruiters were welcome on campus whilst I was in large college during the late 1970′s. They did the very same as school admissions officers. They set up shop in the advice workplace for the greater portion of a day gym teachers had been a lot more than prepared to excuse college students from class to speak to them. I was unaware of any complaints this seemed like a symbiotic relationship for college students, teachers, and recruiters also. Nonetheless, the nation was not at war in 1978.
I guess military recruiters must be far busier at wartime in the 21st century, and they are not able to afford to invest their days waiting for their greatest prospects to quit by the guidance workplace. They also have better advertising, video games, and the Web at their disposal. And nowadays, below No Kid Left Behind, recruiters have access to junior and senior student’s speak to details, presumably, so they can mail literature, or contact students outside of college. They don’t have to wait till college students turn 18.
Congress has debated revisions to No Little one Left Behind, although a reauthorized act will be on hold till right after a new president is sworn in. Even though both Democrats and Republicans have proposed amendments to No Youngster Left Behind, none discussed revisions to the policies that cover military recruiting.
Only 1 presidential candidate, Democrat Bill Richardson of New Mexico, proposed scrapping No Little one Left Behind in its entirety. Sadly, Governor Richardson, possessing fared poorly in the Iowa caucus and getting trailed poorly in New Hampshire, has bowed out of the Presidential elections. If you are a parent who’s upset about “high stakes” standardized tests and aggressive military recruiting in large schools, he was your candidate. If you are a Democrat who is unsure about who to vote for, and if you reside in an early-main state, it is really worth your time to examine your candidate’s position on No Kid Left Behind, as nicely as the rest of his/her political resume.
Considering that Richardson will not be elected president, successful scrapping of No Child Left Behind appears very unlikely unless of course the work is taken up by the winning Presidential candidate. Americans will most probably have to reside with a reauthorized act with a pro-military policy nevertheless in place.
I am not firmly pro-military, nor anti-war, on this concern so, I propose a special solution.
As opposed to peace activists, I see no big deal with the Army and other branches of the service sending direct mail pieces to substantial college students’ households they currently advertise aggressively on Television and the Web. If you do not want your son or daughter to enlist, and they agree, just throw the literature away. I also see no massive deal with military displays on campus or the optional assemblies they’ve established effective when veterans, instead of recruiters, tell why they have selected to serve. These who are not gung-ho don’t have to go.
But I am concerned about aggressive one particular-to-1 marketing on large college campuses when it conflicts with classes. For instance, I had lunch with 1 of my former higher school teachers this past fall, and she told me that students took unexcused absences from class to speak to recruiters, even though the recruiters rudely allowed that to take place.
That is conduct unbecoming to the military, who are normally respectful to civilians, but it can be resolved in between the schools and the military at the station and firm commander levels.
I favor that recruiters display better discretion when it comes to calling college students at home – or better but, not contact them till soon after graduation.
A “do-not-call” policy must be written into legislation covering military recruiting below No Kid Left Behind, in place of the opt-out policy on the books now.
Do-not-contact is fair to everyone: college students, parents, colleges, and the military.
Students focus on college initial and recruiters can place a lot more efforts into prospects that are in a much better position to make a selection. Recruiters can nevertheless mail them, and students and their mother and father can meet with them voluntarily. We currently trust students and their parents to inquire concerns, or to tell recruiters to take no for an answer.
The public colleges should in no way put themselves in the position of influencing a student’s decision to serve. They are now since they ought to collect student information underneath the opt-out policy. Principals’ jobs are on the line if they over-hype or soft-peddle this.
More important, our nation is much better served by a military comprised of substantial college graduates. It is in the nation’s greatest interest for the military to wait until its much less decisive prospects have received their diplomas.
Do-not-contact is less difficult to enforce. It respects the students and mother and father, it will take the schools out of the data collection picture, and it is considerably less difficult for the public to understand.

Ok so i know how your feeling i joined when i was only 17 and i joined the army. my little brother is just now finishing his AF tech school. now there are things that distinguish the different branches of the military. ROTC is if you want to be an Officer and they do get deployed more then your standered Enlisted. Officers start off at higher pay grades do though. if decide to join one of the forces i suggest doing it you junior year as that is about the soonest you can sign up with a little parental concent. During the recruitment proccess you will have to do alot of paper work and they will make you exercise alot to make sure you are ready for all the physical stuff you will be doing in your BCT. Its not that bad and its not as bad as you see in the movies just alot of yelling most of the time. After you sign your contract you will have to wait for your spot in BCT which veries in time. it usually only takes a month or two. As for seeing family and your girlfriend it is a little trying at first but distance makes the heart grow fonder and if you go in the airforce then when you get out of your BCT then you both can move to your duty station together (at your expence) if you are married then the AF pays for your family to come with you i.e. your wife or kids. They dont really treat you that bad in BCT or Tech school, they yell alot and its really just cause they want you to be tough and able to handle any kind of combat environment. They really help you prepare for the whole proccess of getting signed up and getting there so you will know ecactly what you are getting into b4 you even sign the contract. All you really need to do is talk to a recruiter and they can answer any question you will come up with, without a comitment.
Military recruitment is the process of joining the military. I think you mean what is a term of service like. And it is different for each branch of service. However, as you are considering the AF you should know that the AF is the easiest as far as physical training goes. also you aren’t treated badly at any time. The AF doesn’t play that way.
Check out the official site and some of the unofficials like http://www.military.com.
Also if you are planning to enlist, talk to a recruiter from each branch. You may think you want to join the AF but until you talk to a recruiter from each branch, you are not making a fully informed decision. Good luck!
